"STATE OF THE NETWORK" ADDRESS
I’ve gotten a lot of e-mail and questions about our radio network for the upcoming season, and while we have a few quiet days leading up to the season, I wanted to share my thoughts and insight with you. I mentioned WQIC in a post here just in passing a couple of weeks ago, and it sparked many a comment ...Continued

The BEARS have added some more depth on the right side today, inking both Tommy Maxwell and former Philadelphia Flyer and Phantom Darren Reid. Maxwell, who suffered through an injury-shortened season in 2007-08, brings toughness while Reid brings experience and a pretty decent scoring touch as well. With training camp just around the corner in Washington, it would appear that ...Continued

SOME WEEKEND READING FOR YOU
I've been a reader of Terry Frei's for a long time, not only in his Denver Post work and ESPN columns, but also his books. During the lockout in 2004-05, Frei even came to Hershey for a couple of days to do a feature on us when the Avalanche were sidelined by the work stoppage. I thought this was a ...Continued

When Anaheim decided to pull up stakes in Portland and put it's farm team in Des Moines, it must have created an interesting situation for the brothers Dineen. Kevin, the head coach of the Pirates and Anaheim's minor league affiliate, elected to stay recently in his office at the Cumberland County Civic Center under the new flag of the Buffalo ...Continued

AROUND THE DIAL MONDAY MORNING
My thanks to Steve Todd and the Early Morning Show on 100.1, WQIC in Lebanon for having me on the program this morning. It's always good to catch up with Steve, Mike Ebersole and the crew out in the Lebanon Valley. If you missed it, we chatted about the team, the blog, goaltenders, and funny stories from the rink. It ...Continued

I'm having a great summer. First I got the news that Graham Mink is coming back to play for the Bears. That's a great start right there. Then there was the signing of Keith Aucoin. Wow, even better. That was followed by the stocking of Hershey's roster that has made it the envy of most, if not all, other AHL ...Continued

WHEN REAL ESTATE AND HOCKEY COLLIDE
Thanks to alert reader Paul Dunn for passing this note along. It seems that sometimes real estate listings can be a predictor of hockey things to come (and not just because the news comes from me!) It doesn't sound like Washington's Michael Nylander is long for the District. He's put his Potomac home up for sale, for a cool $3,250,000 ...Continued

Call this another door that Bruce Boudreau helped open. The New York Islanders tonight have hired Providence Bruins head coach Scott Gordon to guide the fortunes of the Isles. It's not an accident that so many AHL coaches are getting chances at the NHL level. Not only has Bruce changed the culture in Washington, but he has helped so many ...Continued

RIVERS SIGNS WITH CHICAGO WOLVES
The home dressing room at Allstate Arena just became a little bit more fun. Former BEARS defenseman Jamie Rivers has signed a contract to play for the Chicago Wolves this season. I think any of Jamie's teammates here would agree that there's no one that can lighten a mood in the locker room quite like Jamie can.   Here's the ...Continued

Here it is, the moment you've all been waiting for. The Bears, along with the American Hockey League have released its 2008-09 regular season schedule. Feel free to post commentary about it in the comment section here, and I'll respond to you after I finish letting the media know. I've also added a poll question wondering which road trip looks ...Continued

FORMER BEARS COACH LANDS IN PHILLY
And we thought the biggest news of the day would be the release of the schedule. The Philadelphia Phantoms today promoted head coach Craig Berube across the parking lot to join John Stevens' coaching staff with the Flyers, and hire former BEARS head coach John Paddock to guide the fortunes of the Phantoms. One of the most successful coaches in ...Continued

LOGO INSANITY
Season ticket sales guru Bob Ancharski brought this link to my attention, and I'm sure it will generate both interest and controversy. For a long time now, the Hockey News has ranked hockey logos throughout the sports world, usually devoting an issue a year to ranking them top to bottom throughout all leagues. Today, Bob forwarded me a link I ...Continued

Guess the Portland Pirates weren't fooling anyone. Kevin Dineen will be the constant between the old Anaheim guard and new Buffalo troops when the puck drops this fall at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Leading the Pirates to two Eastern Conference Finals in three seasons under the Duck flag proved to be enough reason for the Sabres to keep him ...Continued

MEET THE NEW BOSS, SAME AS THE OLD BOSS?
Another answer to the 2008 AHL coaching carousel will be announced on Tuesday in Portland. The Pirates, who bid adieu to the Anaheim Ducks after the season, will name their new head coach in partnership with their new affiliate, the Buffalo Sabres. If you can believe the Portland Press Herald's article from last week http://pressherald.mainetoday.com/story.php?id=201540 the new guy might just ...Continued

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have named former assistant coach Dan Bylsma their new head coach. At a press conference Monday morning in northeast PA, Bylsma was officially named to replace the departed Todd Richards, who last month became an assistant coach with the NHL's San Jose Sharks. He's the fifth head coach in Pens history, following Glenn Patrick, Michel Therrien, Joe ...Continued
