SHOVELING OUT IN SPRINGFIELD
Greetings from Springfield, where we're in the midst of a Winter Storm Warning that threatens to cover the surrounding area with eight to 12 inches of snow. Lovely. Pretty good chance it's going to be a rather quiet Mass Mutual Center this afternoon as the boys take the ice, which I suppose is not a bad thing for the visiting ...Continued

We're on our way to Springfield for tomorrow afternoon's game against the Falcons, and I'm doing the best in the meantime to respond to e-mail. I've gotten roughly a metric ton of requests in my inbox asking about the names and artists of the warm-up songs played at Giant Center before the game. There was a time when I could ...Continued

GIROUX STAYING, VARLAMOV ON THE WAY
Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post is reporting that goaltender Simeon Varlamov has been assigned by the Caps to Hershey. He's also reporting that Karl Alzner is a question mark for tomorrow's game in Buffalo and that a defenseman might be needed up top again. Seems like Tyler Sloan's stay in Chocolatetown might be a short one this time. Also, ...Continued

The Capitals have recalled left wing Chris Bourque this morning and assigned Alexandre Giroux to Hershey. It should be interesting to see if Bob Woods chooses to reunite the "Big 3" of Giroux, Keith Aucoin and Graham Mink for Wednesday's game in Springfield. No practice today for the Bears, they'll be back on the ice at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday at ...Continued

BEARS LOOK TO REBOUND SUNDAY AT HOME
The Bears announced just a few minutes ago that defenseman Tyler Sloan has been assigned from Washington. If you count Karl Alzner, the Capitals still have four players up from Hershey on its roster (Alzner, Collins, Giroux, Varlamov.) Sloan had played in 23 games for Washington this season, with a goal in three assists. He'll be paired with Bryan Helmer ...Continued

There are a lot of debates that can be had on a wide variety of topics in this world. But one that in my opinion that is not open to debate is who is the best player in the NHL today. It's Alex Ovechkin. Period. No other argument can be made. Bryan Helmer gets the lone assist on this ...Continued

Thursday, December 18, 2008. It started out as a Christmas shopping trip to Washington for a couple of things on my son’s Christmas list. It ended with me in the visiting radio booth at Verizon Center calling my first NHL game and a night I’ll never forget. The journey started out innocently enough. A visit to Verizon Center would certainly ...Continued

PENS AND BEARS POSTPONED FRIDAY
Friday's game between the Bears and Penguins at Wachovia Arena has been postponed due to heavy snowfall in northeast PA. Unlike Chicago politics, it's ok to vote more than once. It's time for AHL All-Star voting online at http://www.theahl.com/balloting/ With Bruce Boudreau already being inducted into the AHL Hall of Fame, and potentially Bob Woods and Mark French coaching in the game if Hershey still has the best record in the league on January 4, it's time to do our ...Continued

BEARS AND AEROS TONIGHT, BUT FIRST A BIT OF BASEBALL
I'm always a big believer in getting out of the hotel on road trips and seeing the sights (usually either historical or sporting in nature), especially when it's a city we don't get to a whole lot. I caught a huge break this morning after our skate around at Toyota Center when my walk to Minute Maid Park, the home ...Continued

ON THE WAY TO HOUSTON
Not the best of outcomes Thursday night for the Bears in San Antonio, as the boys suffered a 3-0 setback at the hands of the suddenly surging Rampage. Just about game time here in San Antonio, where the Bears will play its first ever regular game in the state of Texas. ON THE GROUND IN SAN ANTONIO
We've set up our base of operations here in downtown San Antonio, after two pretty flawless flights to get us here. Ah, the riverwalk in San Antonio. We'll be there this time tomorrow, but first the powers that be need to figure out who's going and who isn't. It's hardly a moment of deep thought, but with the firing of Carolina Hurricanes head coach Peter Laviolette on Wednesday, it occured to me that the guy that coaches in Washington has something on all his divisional counterparts.
